Beginning during the colder, quieter months offers a low-pressure environment where stroke technique, breath control, and muscle memory can develop naturally at your own pace.

Adult programs, like those at BlueFit Swimming, cater to all skill levels from complete beginners learning to float to experienced adults refining their stroke efficiency. With small, supportive groups, adults can enjoy a low-impact, full-body workout that builds strength without stressing the joints.

To understand the real-world impact of adult lessons, we spoke with Sophia a dedicated adult swim school member at The Pavilion, WACA Ground, who started her journey in mid-July.

In just two months, Sophia's dedication and willingness to learn have yielded incredible progress. Like many adult learners, her decision to take the plunge was driven by a mix of family and personal growth.

“I wanted to become more confident in the water so I could enjoy swimming and spending time in the water with my children," she explains. "I also wanted to challenge myself and develop a skill that would give me greater confidence and enjoyment in the water.”

That initial challenge quickly transformed into tangible success. Reflecting on her rapid development, Sophia notes, “In just two months, I have developed my freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, which I’m really proud of. I can also feel a huge improvement in my fitness and overall confidence in the water.”

For others who might feel nervous or embarrassed about starting swim lessons later in life, Sophia offers encouraging advice rooted in her positive experience. She emphasises the importance of finding the right environment to learn in, sharing:

“I’m telling the truth when I say that starting at the WACA has made such a difference for me. I have been to other centres that are far too busy and have too many adults in each class. The WACA has a real sense of calmness about it, which makes you feel comfortable and supported.” She attributes much of her success to the personalised attention she receives, adding, “Each instructor takes the time to observe you, understand what you’re working towards and help you achieve your goals. I would encourage anyone who feels nervous or embarrassed to just give it a go. You might surprise yourself with what you can achieve.”
